Alberta awards recognize teaching excellence

Alberta’s Excellence in Teaching Awards program was initiated in 1989 by the minister of education to recognize outstanding Alberta teachers; honour creative, innovative and effective teaching; focus public attention on the teaching profession; and, involve Albertans in celebrating teaching excellence.

In the Excellence in Teaching awards program, eligible nominees receive certificates of recognition; semi-finalists, who are not award recipients, receive certificates of recognition and access to $1,500 for professional development, and semi-finalists are honoured at regional ­celebrations in April.

Recipients of a Provincial Excellence in Teaching Award receive certificates of recognition, commemorative pins and access to $4,000 for PD.

SMART Technologies Innovative Use of Technology award recipients receive certificates of recognition, commemorative pins and comprehensive technology packages, award recipients’ schools receive monetary awards and certificates of recognition.

Provincial Excellence in Teaching award recipients and SMART Technologies Innovative Use of Technology award recipients are honoured at a ceremony in May.

Since the inception of the Excellence in Teaching Awards Program, 8,962 teachers have been nominated and 469 have been award recipients.
